Today, on World Patient Safety Day 2024, let’s reflect on the critical role of patient perspectives in medicine R&D.

Understanding real-life patient experiences with safety and risk isn’t just good practice—it’s a key ingredient for developing effective and safe treatments.

We recently interviewed 20 patients across 4 different disease areas, and our number one finding was clear: patients want to be active partners in managing their treatment risks, not just passive recipients of care.

Adverse events aren’t just issues to hand over to pharmacovigilance. They’re opportunities to improve treatment adherence and create better patient experiences.

By integrating patient insights early in the drug development process, we can:

• Identify potential safety concerns before they become issues
• Design clinical trials that better reflect real-world patient needs
• Develop more effective risk management strategies

This World Patient Safety Day, I challenge my pharma and healthcare colleagues: How are you incorporating patient voices on safety in your product strategies?
